Lady Pirates Struggle in Day 1 of USC-Upstate Tourney

SPARTANBURG, S.C. - The Hampton University volleyball team traveled to South Carolina for the USC-Upstate Tournament, which started Friday. Over the two-day tournament, the Lady Pirates faced Wofford, UNC-Asheville, Wofford and tournament host USC-Upstate.

In the opening match of the USC-Upstate tournament, the Lady Pirates met the host Lady Spartans, where they suffered a 3-0 loss (17-25, 22-25, 25-14). This young team is still trying to iron out the kinks. Sophomore Aaryn Harrison had eight kills and seven digs.

Lihi Elkayam led the Lady Pirates with 14 assists.

On the other side of the net, the Lady Spartans’ Jane Hawryliw had 14 kills. Morgan Bucciferro had 19 assists and eight digs. Holly Mauldin had 10 assists.

In the 6 p.m. match against UNC-Ashville, the Lady Pirates lost ,making them 0-6 on the season. They were shut out again 3-0 (13-25, 16-25, 14-25). Senior captain Alyssa Jackson had 13 digs.

Lady Bulldog Lauren Ficker had 13 kills and 21 attacks. Kaitlyn McDaniel had 20 assists.

The Lady Pirates continue in the USC-Upstate Tournament on Saturday, facing Radford at 9 a.m. and will compete against Wofford in the afternoon.
