Lady Rams Struggle in 3-0 Loss to Coastal Carolina in Season Opener

BLACKSBURG, VA- The Winston-Salem State Lady Rams (0-1) stumbled out of the gate to start the 2008 season when the team took a 3-0 loss to the Coastal Carolina Chanticleers (1-0) on the opening day of the Hawthorn Suites Hokie Invitational. The Lady Rams totaled just 20 points in the three sets of the match and fell to the Chanticleers, 25-4, 25-9, and 25-7.

The Lady Rams struggled to find their offense in Friday’s match as the team totaled just five kills. As a team, the Lady Rams had a -.230 hitting percentage for the match. Making matters worse for the Lady Rams was a Coastal Carolina Chanticleer offense that was clicking on all cylinders, totaling 36 kills with 34 assists to go along with 13 service aces in the match.

Sophomore hitter Ashley Harris led the way for the Lady Rams with two kills in the match. Harris and fellow sophomore Erica Cole tied for the team lead in digs in the match while freshman setter Alexandria Brown led the team with three assists in the match.

The Lady Rams will face a much tougher challenge tomorrow when the team takes on the host Virginia Tech Hokies in a noon match-up before wrapping up the tournament by facing last season’s MEAC runners-up, the University of Maryland-Eastern Shore Lady Hawks. The two teams met earlier today with Virginia Tech taking a 3-1 win over the Lady Hawks.
