Hampton Drops Two on Opening Day of the Tiny Laster Tourament
Hampton, V.A.—The Hampton University Lady Pirates went 0-2 on the first day of the Tiny Laster Memorial Tournament on Friday. The tournament, which is named in honor of the late Tiny Laster Hampton’s longtime volleyball and softball coach, is being held at the Boo Williams Complex.
In its opening game of the tournament, the Lady Pirates fell to the South Carolina State Lady Bulldogs 3-2, (25-20, 21-25, 23-25, 25-19, 15-13). Senior Aayrn Harrison dominated the game with a game-high 16 kills. Lihi Elkayam managed to cover a lot of court as she dished out 40 assists in the team’s first loss.
On South Carolina State’s side of the net, Peri Ligons controlled the team with a team-high 12 kills in the victory.
In Hampton’s second match of the day, it seemed as the Lady Pirates were not ready for fast pace of Canisius’ team. The 3-0 (14-25, 15-25, 14-25) loss was upsetting.
Ebonie Vincent had a team-high nine kills and three digs in the loss. Adrianna Vazquez also had a good game with seven kills. Elkayam provided a game-high 23 assists.
Brittany Gerde from Canisius had eight kills in the win over the Lady Pirates. They had 10 blocks to Hampton’s two.
“We have a day of competition and now are able to assess what we need to be successful in tomorrow’s tournament play,” said senior Ese Ighdosa.
