JACKSON, Miss. - JSU’s senior linebacker, Marcellus Speaks was named the Southwestern Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Week for the opening week of the 2008 college football season.

Speaks, a 6-2, 230 pound senior from Jackson, Miss. was one of the standouts in JSU’s 17-13 loss to Hampton for the 4th Annual MEAC/SWAC Challenge in Orlando, FL. He was virtually a one man recking crew, contributing in some way on just about every play. For the game he finished with a game high 12 tackles and four tackles for loss. He also had two forced fumbles. For his efforts against Hampton he was named JSU’s Most Outstanding Player of the Game.

Jackson State will look to rebound against the Stillman College Tigers in the Inaugural W.C. Gorden Classic on Saturday. Kickoff is set for 4 p.m.
