Delta Devils Defense Rock Solid in Shut out Over Steers

Itta Bena, Miss. — Mississippi Valley State€™s Ronald Brewer carried the ball 17 times for 105 yards and three touchdowns, but it was the Delta Devils defense that was showcased tonight as they shutout the Steers of Texas College, 38-0, in Valley€™s season opener.

En route to their first shutout victory since a 10-0 win over Arkansas-Pine Bluff in the 2006 season opener, the Delta Devils defense held the Steers to only 192 yards of total offense (47 rushing) and zero trips inside of the red zone.

MVSU quarterback Ryan Burciaga completed 15 of 32 passes with two touchdowns. Brandon Stargell recorded six receptions for 74 yards; while Chris Watkins had 3 receptions for 62 yards including a 36 yard touchdown. Defensively Rory Malone had nine tackles; with Fred Poole adding seven including two sacks.

Texas Collge€™s Joe Carter completed 10 of 24 passes for 106 yards. Justin Williams and Tim Jones hauled in four receptions each and 42 and 35 yards respectively. Marelius Epps led the way with eight tackles followed by Cedric Gillum€™s six.

The Delta Devils will enjoy an open week next week before returning to the field traveling to Baton Rouge, LA to face the Jaguars of Southern University September 13th.
