ALLEN ANNOUNCES ED TYSON WILL NOT RETURN NEXT SEASON
PRINCESS ANNE, Md. - The University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) Head Men’s Basketball Coach Frankie Allen announced this morning that starting guard Ed Tyson will not return to the team this upcoming season.
“Tyson has rendered himself academically ineligible and will no longer be part of the men’s basketball program,” said Allen.
Tyson, an All-Mid Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Second Team member, averaged a conference best 20.2 points per game while starting in all 32 games for the Hawks last season. He also led the team with 54 steals, 1,176 minutes, 219 field goals and 73 three-pointers.
Tyson entered the school’s 1,000 point club on December 22, 2007 against Navy. His 646 total points in 2007-08 rank him second all-time for points in a season behind Ken “Chick” Simmons who scored 669 in 1978.
The 6-2, 200-pound senior guard will remain in school to concentrate on academics. UMES must now face the challenge of filling the void left by his departure.
“We will assess the situation but I believe we have the nucleus in place with all the young talent we brought in to help this program move forward,” said Allen.
Allen will have no further comments on the issue.
UMES will now start to prepare for the upcoming season which kicks off with Hawk Hysteria on October 17.
