SIX PIRATES NAMED TO VaSID ACADEMIC ALL-STATE TEAM

HARRISONBURG, Va. – The Virginia Sports Information Directors honored 222 collegiate student-athletes by naming them to the 2007-08 VaSID Academic All-State Team on Wednesday. Six Hampton University student-athletes were honored.

Angela Balser (Prince George, Va.), a senior on the softball team, was honored. The business management major has a 3.62 grade-point average, and during the season, Balser batted a team-best .388 with eight home runs and 44 RBI.

Senior Barry Bostick (Trenton Falls, N.J.) was also honored, thanks to the physical education major’s 3.83 GPA. Bostick finished fourth in the decathlon at the MEAC Outdoor Championships this past season, while also helping the Pirates’ 4×100-meter relay team win the conference title.

Gabriel Groh (Sao Paulo, Brazil) helped the men’s tennis team win the MEAC regular season title this past season, despite going 4-7 in singles play. Groh did combine with Gellert Varga to go 7-4 in doubles play, and the finance major has a 4.06 GPA.

Stephanie James (Colorado Springs, Colo.), who in March won the President’s Cup, was honored because of her 3.95 GPA in public relations. James, who is currently in Beijing as an Ambassador for the Olympic Games, averaged 4.3 points a game for the Lady Pirates this past season.

Kevin Teel (Bowie, Md.) was also honored, thanks to his 3.30 GPA in the field of aviation electronic systems. The junior, who stars on both the football and track & field squads, caught 33 passes for 433 yards and four touchdowns in 2007. Teel also had a hand in the Pirates’ title in the 4×100-meter relay at the MEAC Outdoor Championships.

Men’s basketball senior Adrian Woodard (Sanford, N.C.) was the final Pirate honored by VaSID, compiling a 3.21 GPA in business management.  He averaged 6.6 points and 5.6 rebounds a contest for the Pirates this past season.

This year’s Academic All-State Team is the largest VaSID has ever honored. Student-athletes from NCAA Division I, II and III, as well as NAIA schools and independents, were recognized. To be eligible, student-athletes must have a cumulative GPA of 3.20 or higher, must have achieved sophomore status and could not have been in their first year of athletic competition at their current school.
