Powell, Kennebrew sign scholarships with Gold Nuggets
NEW ORLEANS — Two forwards — Brittany Powell of Milwaukee, Wis., and Danielle
Kennebrew of Atlanta, Ga. — have signed scholarships to play women’s basketball
for Xavier University of Louisiana.
That increases to eight the Gold Nuggets’ newcomers for the 2008-09 academic year.
Half of those came during the spring signing period.
Powell, a 6-footer, will have two seasons of eligibility at Xavier after transferring from
San Jose State, an NCAA Division I member. She started 51 of 61 games and
averaged 10.1 points and 5.8 rebounds per game her first two seasons with the Spartans.
She made the Western Athletic Conference All-Freshman team in 2006-07 and was
an Academic All-WAC selection.
At Milwaukee’s Divine Savior Holy Angels High School, Powell was honorable mention
all-state, first-team all-conference and a Milwaukee Journal Sentinel All-Area second-team
selection after averaging 14 points and 6.9 rebounds per game as a senior. Powell also
lettered two years in volleyball and one year in track and field.
Kennebrew, who is 5-11, calls Atlanta home but grew up in Miami, Fla. She averaged 11.4 points,
10.4 rebounds, 1.8 blocked shots and 1.8 steals per game as a senior (2006-07) for Miami’s
Archbishop Carroll High School and was chosen to the Miami Herald All-Metro third team
in classes 4A-1A. This past season she averaged eight points and six rebounds for
IMG Academies Pendleton School, a postgraduate women’s team in Bradenton, Fla.
Kennebrew, a district champion in the shot put her senior year, will major in biology at
Xavier.
Xavier, an NAIA Division I school, was 27-7 this past season and won the Gulf Coast
Athletic Conference Tournament. The Gold Nuggets qualified for the national tournament
for a school-record seventh consecutive time.
