Four Hornets Receive Preseason All-SWAC Honors

The Southwestern Athletic Conference announces its 2008 Preseason All-Conference Football Team and four Alabama State University Hornets received honors on Tuesday at the 2008 Media Day luncheon.

Cornerback Brandon Averett and linebacker Rechard Johnson were named to the first team while running back Rahmod Traylor and offensive lineman Andrew Showalter were second-team selections. Members of the All-Conference teams were selected through voting done by SWAC head football coaches and sports information directors.

Last season, Averett, a senior from Phenix City, Ala., was one of State’s top cornerbacks. He finished with 60 tackles, three for loss, three interceptions, 11 pass breakups and two blocked kicks.

Johnson, a junior from Montgomery, Ala., ended the season with 121 tackles, 20 for loss, three sacks, six quarterback hurries, one pass breakup, and two forced fumbles.

Traylor, a reserve behind 2007 SWAC Offensive Player of Year Jay Peck, has big shoes to fill. Rahmod, a junior from Memphis, rushed for 356 yards and five touchdowns.

Showalter, a sophomore offensive lineman from Opp, Ala., paced the offensive line and opened holes for one of the top running games in the conference last season. He will be instrumental in supporting the new Hornet Raid offense in 2008.

Surprised and also excited, head coach Reggie Barlow said, “Naturally this is rewarding for the guys because they are acknowledged and this gives them something to build on.”The SWAC’s predicted order of finish was also announced. The Hornets were picked to finish fourth in the SWAC East Division.
