Delta Devils Season Ends with Heartbreaking Loss to Tigers

Baton Rouge, LA The Tigers of Jackson State advanced in the 2008 Southwestern Athletic Conference baseball tournament while the Mississippi Valley State Delta Devils season came to an abrupt end as the Tigers handed them an elimination round, 6-4 loss.

After falling behind 3-0 in the fourth inning on a three-run LaDerek Camper homerun the Delta Devils picked up a run on a solo shot over the left field wall by designated hitter Willie Mays.

Derrick Johnson would get the run back in the Tigers half of the seventh inning scoring on an error by short stop Paul Olsen. Down 4-1, Valley picked up two runs in the seventh and one in the eighth to tie the score 4-4 entering the final inning. Starting pitcher Pernell Halliman scored the would be game winning run when Delta Devils pitcher Jeff Squier committed a fielding error on a one out bunt by Michael Bravo.

The Delta Devils managed only four hits off of two JSU pitchers with Mays finishing 2-for-5 with a run scored and a RBI. On the mound Derrick Townsend went eight and a third innings receiving the loss.

Jackson State (37-21) was led by Halliman who picked up the win on the mound while finishing 3-for-6 at the plate with a run scored and three RBI€™s, Camper would also have three hits.
