FAMU TRACK TEAMS 8TH AT MEAC OUTDOOR MEET

BALTIMORE, Md. - Both Florida A&M University Track teams stood eighth in the overall standings after the opening round of competition at the 2008 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships here Friday at Earl Banks Stadium on the campus of Morgan State University.

• On the Women’s side, Maryland-Eastern Shore (43) holds the first round lead, with Norfolk State (39) a close second.

The Lady Rattlers finished Friday with 12 points, all coming in the pole vault, thanks to the 1-2 punch of Ashante Davis (8 pts/2.36 meters/2nd) and Antoinette Suer (4 pts/2.21 meters/5th).

Three-time All-MEAC senior YaTandrea Burke qualified for Saturday’s final in the 1500 meter run with a fourth place finish at 4:51.27.

Other Top Ten finishes included Nichola Listhrop getting ninth in the 800 meters (2:16.49) and the 4×100 relay team of Jesseka Forbes, Dericka Love, Kendria Strong andWhitney Young finishing seventh in Friday’s preliminaries (47.14).

• On the Men’s Side, Norfolk State (70) vaulted out to a huge lead after Friday’s event, with Maryland-Eastern Shore (31) a distant second heading into Saturday.

The Rattlers got their eight points Friday from Carlos Franklin (2), who finished seventh in the 5000 meters (16:08.29); Bryan Turner (4), who was fifth in the high jump (2.04 meters) and Frank Scott (2), who placed seventh in the discus.

Additionally, FAMU had several performers qualify for finals on Saturday including Franklin in the 1500 meters, after finishing third overall in the prelims (4:03.66); Daquam Lee in the 800 meters (3rd overall/1:53.13); Greg Bynes in the 110 hurdles (8th overall/14.46) and Craig Scott in the 100 meter dash (8th overall/10.66).

Final round action begins at 10 a.m. Saturday.
